Tips for Snowshoeing – what to bring

What to take:

  • daypack (2000 to 3000 cubic inches)
  • water bottles: 2 (1 litre each)
  • swiss army style knife/leatherman multi-tool
  • repair kit
  • ski poles
  • duct tape
  • extra basket for ski poles
  • sunglasses/goggles
  • maps: topographic, 7.5 or 15 minute map of area
  • compass
  • lunch/snacks
  • sunscreen, spf 15 minimum
  • lip balm, spf 15 minimum
  • headlamp/flashlight
  • lighter/waterproof matches
  • first-aid kit
  • water filter, iodine, or other purification system
  • toilet paper
  • camera, mobile phone
  • whistle

What to wear:

  • sun hat
  • warm ski hat
  • lightweight, upper wicking layer (Note: Avoid cotton. Stick with capilene, polypropelene, or another wicking material.)
  • heavier, upper wicking layer, mid-weight
  • shell jacket
  • heavier insulation layer, which can be stowed at the top of your pack
  • lightweight long-john thermal underwear bottoms
  • shell pants
  • liner sock (wool, polypropylene, or capilene)
  • mid-weight sock (wool, polypropylene, or capilene)
  • neck gaiter
  • lightweight balaclava
  • warm, waterproof gloves or mittens
  • extra pair of gloves or mittens
  • extra lightweight upper layer
  • gaiters
  • heavy hiking boots
