What to take:

  • backpack (3,000 to 7,000 cubic inches, depends on the length of trip)
  • waterproof pack cover
  • water bottles (two each, 32 oz. minimum) or water pouch, hydration system
  • water filter/purifier
  • swiss army style knife/leatherman multi-tool
  • general pack/stove/tent repair kit
  • duct tape (wrap around waterbottles)
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen, SPF 15 minimum
  • maps: topographic, 7.5 or 15 minute map of area
  • compass
  • headlamp/flashlight
  • lighter, waterproof matches, and firestarter
  • personal toiletry items
  • toilet paper
  • camera, mobile phone
  • binoculars
  • watch
  • bug repellent
  • sleeping bag with stuff sack (waterproof)
  • sleeping pad
  • food

What to wear:

  • sun hat
  • warm ski hat
  • lightweight, long-sleeved upper wicking layer (no cotton, stick with capilene, polypropelene, or another wicking material)
  • heavier, long-sleeved upper wicking layer, mid-weight
  • heavier insulation layer, a fleece jacket or sweater, which can be stowed at the top of your pack for easy access
  • shell jacket (waterproof)
  • lightweight long-john bottoms
  • fleece pants
  • shell pants (waterproof)
  • gloves or mittens
  • extra lightweight, upper layer
  • gaiters
  • hiking boots suitable for terrain
  • camp shoes/sandals
  • t-shirt
  • bandana
  • quick-drying shorts/swimsuit
  • hiking shorts
  • socks: two pair liners and two-three pair heavy wool or synthetic hiking socks
